I spent eight months living and working in a highly oppressive environment: a rural Chinese high school in remote Southwestern Hunan. China may be modernizing quickly, but the countryside is still the Third World – people poop on the sidewalk outside restaurants, one of my students died of rabies – that kind of Third World stuff.
Anyhow, after eight months, four of which were spent with a lung infection, a co-worker and I visited a spectacular, out-of-place Buddhist temple (Puji Temple) in the town. On the temple grounds, we found this little, secret cave. In the roof of the cave was a window to the heavens that provided a freeing and inspirational experience.
